Innovative Ways of Boosting Smartphone File Storage Through Apps

Posted: 25 Jul 2017 01:28 AM PDT

Your smartphone can do quite a lot. Beyond the usual phone calls, texts, social media posts and photos, it can make your work and personal life far more organised. Without so much as thinking about it, we can schedule meetings, amend documents and start photo albums with our phones, but where do all of those files go?

These days, many Android smartphones have plenty of storage. The typical mid-range Android phone will likely have 16GB or 32GB internal storage space. That seems like a lot, considering that the average Word or Excel document can sometimes come in at under 100KB. However, when watching a two-hour film, that can use as much as 4.3GB.

Given how much megabytes and gigabytes that some file types need, getting the most out of your smartphone's storage is useful. Whether to prevent the dreaded "your phone is running low on storage" message or just because you need it for storing far more than just a few pics, there are ways of making more room and cutting down on pesky paperwork.

Up in the Cloud

Without doubt, cloud storage is the greatest innovation in file storage of the past 20 years. Removing the need for microSD cards and USB flash drives, it has allowed users to move files effortlessly from their hard drives to an online storage space which can be accessed with any WiFi-enabled device.

Many modern smartphones that are a little low on internal storage space could use the cloud for all of those precious photos, videos and music files, and this space is becoming used more and more for those all important work tasks too. Day to day tasks such as storing and using spreadsheets and documents or writing notes ahead of an important meeting are all common uses of our smartphones, and if we were suddenly unable to use them to fulfil these tasks then we would perhaps find working life to be a little more of a challenge.

Whilst this cloud space is something we often take for granted, a recent piece of research released by cloud storage specialists Gradwell has highlighted just how much physical storage we would actually be using if it weren't for digital or cloud based storage. In the Customer Service sector alone, mobile phones were dubbed the most common way of work and shockingly, the average number of files produced by people working in this field could fill a house after just 9 days.

File Compression

Some of the most important files and folders in your phone could be among those reducing your storage space. If you have a number of songs or albums downloaded that are taking up too much room, there are file compressor apps that could come to your rescue.

For Android devices, AndroZip turns multiple files into Zip folders. This groups many of the same files in one folder, making each individual file smaller in the process. In shrinking those files without affecting the way in which they can be used, you will boost your device's storage in the process. More room for your favourite band's songs, basically!

Cache Cleaning

Without realising it, a few days of uninterrupted browsing on your smartphone could build up cache files. These are archived web pages from your browser and apps and, over a few days, could build up to as much as 1GB. That's the equivalent of eight hours of music streaming or downloading Facebook from the Google Play Store a dozen times over.

To save precious storage space, an app can help you to clean your cache whenever you need an extra few megabytes for a big file. The App Cache Cleaner can do that with just one tap or swipe, removing unnecessary storage that would otherwise be taking up space needed for important files. Make sure to clean your cache every few days in case storage is low.
