3 Markets Exploding Thanks to Ecommerce

Posted: 23 Nov 2016 10:32 PM PST

The internet has revolutionized the way we shop and conduct business. It has become much more possible for artisans and creators to sell handmade items to anyone who may want them. Gone are the days of having to wake up at 5 a.m. Saturday to make it to the local farmer's market and hope someone passing by likes your wares. With a business website through an e-commerce platform, you can set up shop from the comfort of your own home!

If you're thinking about starting an e-commerce website, consider one of the following three markets that are blowing up!

Homemade Goods

It's become sort of difficult to imagine selling homemade goods for a living before C2C websites started popping up on the internet. As stated earlier, you'd have probably had to consistently hit every farmer's market or a swap meet in your area in order to even have a chance. Now with sites like Etsy boasting over 54 million registered users, all offering their own unique creations of art, photography, jewelry, clothing, and more, the artisan no longer has to endlessly travel to physical marketplace after marketplace if they want to sell their goods.

And thanks to websites like Pinterest, doing-it-yourself is en vogue and very much the way things are going to be for the foreseeable future. If you're an artisan, your options extend far beyond Etsy's marketplace. Check out this list of 40 Etsy-alternative marketplaces, each offering their own unique twist.

Bookstores

It comes as a surprise to no one when we say that e-readers, like the Kindle, dealt a near fatal blow to brick-and-mortar retailers. For example, the bookstore Borders went out of business because they did not develop an e-reader in time to save themselves – as Barnes & Noble did when they launched the Nook. However, what technology takes away, can also be returned.

The affordability of hosted enterprise e-commerce websites, like Shopify, allows indie book vendors to take their business online – and it is a formula that works. Online vendors like Better World Books are doing so well that they have been able to donate $9 million dollars to over 80+ nonprofit literacy development programs.

Subscription Boxes

This phenomenon arose out of the success of Netflix's home delivery service. For the uninitiated, Netflix (before their impressive move into streaming) allowed you to pick a certain amount of movies, and delivered them straight to your home for a monthly subscription fee. From this, we have brands that are taking over and filling in niche markets. For example, LootCrate, a subscription box that will send you an assortment of mystery "geeky" items like comics, video game memorabilia, toys and apparel. Each month the contents of the box change as a new theme is rolled out.

There's also the Dollar Beard Club for—you guessed it—beards! It's a monthly subscription of beard oil and other essentials for keeping your man mane looking healthy and strong. These brands are entirely without brick-and-mortar operations and promoted almost entirely through the internet.

E-commerce has opened the door to the world for craftsmen who were previously stuck in their localities. It has resurrected the common bookstore, and paved the way for subscription boxes to come to fruition as a viable business model. Without e-commerce, none of these things would be possible!
